Experiments in art and the lessons learned

La Guitarra

La Guitarra 2

This is a very old drawing but one of my favorites! I took a few guitar lessons during my trip to Costa Rica and wanted to capture the magic of that amazing trip. I had my teacher set up in front of a window to get just the right light hitting the guitar and hand, took a photo in black and white, and then was able to draw this based on the photo.

Lessons learned:
– Black and white photography
– Light and shade
– Drawing realistic human hands in detail
– Setting up a model

I had an idea in mind, but rarely am I able to translate those ideas onto paper without something concrete to look at.  So I found my inspiration online and drew this lovely Auntie.  Then I scanned it onto my computer to edit.
Lessons learned:
– Cartoon people
– Angled face
– Hands
– Computer editing to clean up pencil smudges and add color
– The magic of fiverr.com to complete the detailed technical aspects of editing I wasn’t equipped for
